Privacy Policy — Inkteract

This document is pending final legal review.

At Inkteract, our goal is to fix reading, not to watch you read. Because our tools work with the text on your screen, we want to be plain about what we see, what we keep, and who helps us process it.

The short version

  • We do not sell your data. We show no ads and use no tracking pixels.
  • When you click something to read, the text you picked and its sentence are sent to our servers to build your card. We do not keep a copy of the pages, articles or books you read.
  • If you sign in, we keep your Google name, email and picture, plus a short history of your lookups.
  • You can ask us to delete your data any time at support@inkteract.ai.

What we collect

If you sign in with Google

Signing in uses Google Sign-In. We receive only your name, email address and profile picture (the basic OpenID scopes). We never see your Google password and we do not request access to your Gmail, Drive, contacts or any other Google data. We use your Google account identifier to recognise you when you come back.

When you use Inkteract to read

When you click a word, sentence or paragraph, the extension or embed script sends the text you selected and the sentence around it to the Inkteract API so we can generate your card (definition, translation, audio, image, chat and so on). If you are signed in, we also keep a record of that lookup for your own history, with a short preview (the first 80 characters of what you clicked).

Usage and cost metrics

For every request we log technical usage data per API key and, when you are signed in, per user: which feature ran, which AI model was used, token counts, response time, status and the cost of the request. We use this to run the service, control costs and prevent abuse.

Standard server logs

Like any web service, our servers and hosting provider process technical data such as your IP address and browser type to deliver the service and keep it secure.

What happens when you click a word

The selected text and its surrounding sentence travel to the Inkteract API over an encrypted connection. They are processed in real time to build your card, and parts of the request are passed to the AI providers listed below. We do not store the pages, articles or documents you read, and we do not record the web address of the page you are on. The only content-related thing we keep is the short preview stored in your history when you are signed in. Our AI providers may keep requests for a limited time under their own policies.

How we use data

  • To create your cards and run the features you ask for.
  • To sign you in, keep you signed in, and show you your own lookup history.
  • To measure usage and cost, fix bugs, keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
  • To send essential service email (for example account or support messages).

Who processes data for us

We share data only with the service providers that help us run Inkteract, and only what each one needs:

  • OpenRouter: AI language models and text-to-speech. Receives the selected text and sentence.
  • Replicate: image generation. Receives a text prompt for the image.
  • Google Maps: geocoding places mentioned in text so we can show a map.
  • Couryo: sending transactional email.
  • Hostinger: server hosting.
  • Cloudflare: DNS.
  • Google: Sign-In, if you choose to use it.

These providers act on our instructions and are subject to their own privacy terms. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell or rent your personal data.
  • We do not show advertising and do not use tracking pixels or third-party ad trackers.
  • We do not build a profile of the pages you visit or archive the content you read.

The browser extension

The Inkteract Chrome extension (Manifest V3) contains no remotely hosted code: everything it runs ships inside the extension package. It only contacts the Inkteract API, and only when you click something to look it up. Your settings and sign-in session are kept in your browser. Removing the extension removes that local data.

Publishers and the embed script

Some websites add Inkteract to their pages with a script tag. On those sites, readers get the same cards, and the same text-and-sentence requests are sent to our API on behalf of the publisher. Publishers are responsible for telling their own visitors that they use Inkteract. Visitors can contact us at support@inkteract.ai with any question.

How long we keep data

  • Account data (name, email, picture): while your account exists.
  • Lookup history and usage records: kept so we can show your history and account for costs, until you ask us to delete them or your account is deleted.
  • Content you read: not stored by us.

We may keep limited records longer where the law requires or to prevent fraud and abuse.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA/CPRA in California), you may have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, receive a copy, object to or restrict certain processing, and not be discriminated against for using these rights. We apply these rights to everyone.

To use any of them, or to request deletion of your account and history, email support@inkteract.ai from the address on your account. We will confirm your identity and reply within 30 days. You can also stop data collection at any time by signing out or uninstalling the extension, and you can revoke Inkteract's access in your Google Account settings.

Children

Inkteract is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 where local law sets a higher age), and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us data, email support@inkteract.ai and we will delete it.

International users

Inkteract is operated from the United States, and our providers may process data in the US and other countries. By using the service you understand your information may be transferred there. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for international transfers.

Security

We use encrypted connections, restrict access to our systems, and keep secrets out of our code. No online service can promise perfect security, but we work to protect your data.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and for material changes we will make a reasonable effort to let you know.
